Railway track safety is a critical factor in preventing accidents and ensuring reliable train operations. Traditional methods of railway track inspection are largely manual, time-consuming, and prone to human error, which may lead to undetected faults and delayed maintenance. This project presents an automated Railway Track Fault Detection System using an embedded platform to improve inspection efficiency and safety. The proposed system employs an Arduino Uno microcontroller as the central control unit, along with sensors such as IR/ultrasonic sensors to detect cracks, gaps, or obstacles on the railway track. A motor-driven inspection vehicle moves along the track while continuously monitoring track conditions. When a fault is detected, the system immediately stops the vehicle and activates alert mechanisms. The exact location of the detected fault is obtained using a GPS module and transmitted to a predefined mobile number through a GSM module. This system reduces manual inspection effort, enables early fault detection, and provides real-time location-based alerts. Due to its low cost, simplicity, and reliability, the proposed solution is suitable for educational purposes and small-scale railway monitoring applications, with potential for future enhancements using advanced sensors and intelligent algorithms.
